The duo we didn’t know we needed. Daughtry and Lizzy Hale from Halestorm have teamed up to cover a classic from Journey. The singers joined forces to honor the 40th anniversary of Journey’s iconic hit “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)”, and have created a unique rendition of the song.
The iconic hit was released in 1983 on Journey’s eighth studio album “Frontiers” and peaked at #8 on the Billboard Top 100 chart during that time. The idea for the cover came about after Daughtry was watching the season finale of Stranger Things with his wife and Separate Ways was played on the episode.
While sometime covers can be hard to recreate without receiving backlash, Daughtry and Hale created the perfect mix with their strong vocals and the addition of a hard and heavy sound. They took the classic hit and turned it into their own, and after reading some comments from hardcore Journey fans, it looks like the cover has their stamp of approval.
Daughtry spoke of this experience on the People Every Day Podcast saying, “I was watching the finale of Stranger Things, and they used ‘Separate Ways’ in this incredibly epic scene. It was so moving, and me and my wife were watching, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is the song we need to cover’ — and, to my knowledge, I don’t think anyone has put a version out.”
On his collaboration with Hale, Daughtry comments saying “Lzzy and I had been talking for years about working together, and we have so much respect for each other as friends and artists. I called her and was like, ‘Would you be interested?’ And she was like, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s my go-to karaoke song.’ It just felt like it was meant to happen.”
Lzzy Hale also commented on the cover saying, “Chris Daughtry and I have been threatening to unleash a duet for years. What better way to do that than by paying tribute to one of our mutual influences…. JOURNEY!” Hale shared. “This song is not only part of the Stranger Things soundtrack, but has been my go-to for karaoke for as long as I can remember! I’m so honored to have been a part of this and I hope it makes you smile as big as I did while recording it!”
The Separate Ways cover comes as the first release following Daughtry’s 2021 album “Dearly Beloved” which was the band’s first independent release. The band will be hitting the road this spring for some dates in the UK.
Halestorm recently released the deluxe version of their latest album “Back From the Dead”, which includes seven bonus tracks.
